Oakhill United 2 High Trust Rangers 3 (SSEC Junior League Division 3)
When you go into the biggest game of the season with a brand new formation to cope with, a force one gale filled with biting rain blowing into your face and you are playing uphill in semi-darkness, the last thing you need is for Him to turn on you. Oakhill found to their cost on Saturday during the crunch 'El Gran Classico' derby with former comrades High Trust, that all those weeks of missing Church on a Sunday finally came back to haunt us.
An ill-fated 3-5-2 formation saw Logan in goal, Neil joining Mitch and Hughes, with Holtie screening the back three. Mikey D and Kev took the wide positions and Little Dave and Elzie completed the midfield. Upfront, Big Dave was paired with in-form Matt Harris.
Essentially, the first half can be summarised as follows: Joel mistake, good finish. 0-1. Corner straight in. 0-2. Big Dave handball under pressure from yet another inswinging corner. Penalty. Ginger hat-trick (the worst possible kind).0-3.
Half time saw God rather conveniently switch the bad weather off and Fred make the inevitable switch to 4-4-2 and some concerted Oak pressure led to comedy own goal of the season, as Sam Deacon bent over to display his rear to Dan Gaffney and allowed the ball to bounce into the net. 1-3.
More Oakhill pressure saw a set piece only cleared as far as Johnny Holt 30 yards out, who rifled a low volley into the bottom corner, sparking jubilant celebrations in the capacity crowd. 2-3.
Nathan and Beigeinho entered the fray to add fresh impetus to the side. This nearly worked as Elzie sent a half-chance, half-volley narrowly over the bar and Oakhill mounted a serious bid to clinch all three points. This obviously ran the risk of being caught out on the break, but the Beige One was on hand to scoop over his own bar from six-yards with a trademark recovery slide tackle. A slightly less passive slide tackle was subsequently sent through the legs of Matty Taylor, who was strangely no longer a threat for the rest of the game....
Alas, the final whistle sounded and Oakhill were forced to shake the hand of their bitterest foes. In fairness, apart from Hughes having handbags with the oppo no.9 (who must have hands like Logan's to have got them round Lee's neck), what could have been a poor game was actually a very good one, played in an excellent spirit. Credit to the opposition, the ref and Oakhill for showing the right attitude throughout.
Credit to every player on Saturday, as the effort and commitment were there, it just wasn't to be. There can't be too many teams in the league who can come out 3-0 down from half time and keep a clean sheet. The problem may be that we are having to climb these sort of mountains every week. Man-of -the-match for wonder goal and bags of graft was Johnny Holt, ironically our best player in a 'derby'. Logan also deserved praise for kicking well in the most trying conditions imaginable.
This was a relegation six-pointer, but it's ok because we are only away to unbeaten Trinity next week. Let's hope it's not the Holy Trinity............
