With a goal from a set-piece move, a new man of the match recipient and the first clean sheet of the season, it was more positive at the San Duppas on Saturday than the result of a New Addington schoolgirl's Clear Blue Pregnancy Test...
Logan returned in goal, freeing Andy Redmond up for a controversial role up front in tandem with Neil Carnt. The back four retained it's settled look, with Beigeinho at right-back, Toss on the left and Joel and Hughes in the centre. With the Holt brothers anchoring the midfield, Matty Harris and Mikey D were expected to provide the attacking support down the flanks.
Oakhill started at 100 miles per hour as per usual, but with a bit more composure than usual. SCR were subjected to wave after wave of attacks, culminating in a series of corners. One of these was whipped in by Mikey to be met at the near post by the diving Johnny Holt. His adroit flick picked out Neil at the back post, who buried a neat header. 1-0.
SCR were stung into action and the remainder of the first half was a tight affair, with both sides battling hard to gain the upper hand. The half time team talk laid out the importance of focus and the need to stretch our lead. Within 30 seconds of the restart it was clear that our composure had departed, as we sat way too deep, dragged our midfield into defence and set up a rearguard action. This effectively ended the quality service provided by Harris and Mikey in the first half and left the forwards isolated (a shame because when Andy and Neil were getting the ball they were doing a fine job of retaining possession long enough for teammates to reinforce the moves).
Just as the first half was the midfield and attacks chance to shine, so the second half belonged to the back five. Both Beige and Kev tucked in to assist Mitch and Hughes and restrict SCR to a handful of chances - Logan spread at the feet of a one-on-one forward and then unconventionally volleyed a low drive off his line. Bizarre, yet effective. Corners and free kicks were defended as though our lives depended on it and it only remained for Oak to survive a late series of long throw-ins and for Logan to 'wipe-out' Joel in an accidental collision which must have left him feeling like Noel Edmonds on Saturday Evening TV in the late 90's.
Multiple candidates for Man of the Match, including all of the defence for obvious reasons, but Michael Doran just edged it with a performance illuminated by several dangerous deliveries, or in his own words 'six potential assists'..........
