Oakhill United 1 Battersea Reserves 5 (SSEC Junior League Division 3)
The return of 'The Brain Trust' management duo along with several so-called 'Galacticos' did little to improve matters, as Oakhill slumped to their first home defeat of the season. Reputations lay in tatters after a first half performance littered with errors and a distinctly un-Oakhill lack of fight. Thankfully, redemption came in the form of a vigorous second half fightback, which at least meant pride was repaired ahead of the next fixture.
Logan returned in goal and Brett and Little Tosser were at full-back. Joel and Hughesy were paired at centre-back, with the latter taking the captain's armband in the continued absence of Matty Hunt. The management kept faith with Dave Holt and Matt Harris in the wide midfield positions, with Neil Carnt back to partner Johnny Holt in the middle. Nathan got the nod to accompany the in-form Skins at the spearhead of an attacking formation.
After 5 minutes it was obvious that the selection had gone horribly wrong. Kev was being tormented by the right-winger, the centre-backs were tackling each other, Brett was being outpaced and even the Holt/Carnt axis was losing the battle against an admittedly talented Battersea midfield. Skins and Nathan did their level best to feed off the scraps they were being offered up front, but to no avail. The only good to come out of the first half was four top-class saves from Loag in goal(it's an anagram, geddit?) which kept the scoreline down to a deeply unrespectable level at half-time. 0-4.
The hairdryer was flicked on to it's lowest setting during the break, with Fred calmly stating 5 sentient points and Tom chipping in with 1 every 2 minutes. The real action came from the bench, as Elsie replaced Toss, Nathan came off for Nick and Mikey 'The New Paki' Doran replacing the ineffectual Dave Holt at left mid.
Vive la difference. Oak came out at 100 miles an hour, with Nick causing all sorts of difficulties for the Battersea defence and our midfield finally starting to get a grip. Elsie 'Don't call me Eric' Hewlett dealt with the troublesome right-winger in a way which meant for the rest of the game he was more absent than a permanently hungover call-centre worker. Joel and Hughes realised violence was the answer. Mikey and Harris started to stretch the defence, creating gaps for Lewis and Nick to exploit, leading to a hack on Skins in the box. Up stepped Nick for the penalty, which he calmly placed wide of the left hand post of a keeper who could only be described as Michael Essien in a pair of mittens. This only spurred us on though, as the work-rate increased, resulting in a superb passing move crowned by Mikey's calm finish. 1-4.
From here on out it was a tough battle, as Harris bravely played through an injury due to the half-time revolution, and the back four struggled to cope with the Diaby lookalike's strength and skill. The graft finally fell away in the last five minutes as Battersea scored a showboating fifth from close-range. 1-5.
The best that can be said is that we deserved to win the second half for our commitment and dedication alone, against a very good opposition. Mitch played well in adversity, Skins continued his all-action start to the season and Nick and Els proved their points in the best way possible off the bench. The team is still taking shape and with the knowledge that no-one is now certain of their place due to the big pool of players available, results will surely improve. However, the fact that our best player was our keeper in a game in which we conceded five means everyone in the squad will have to raise their game and start to take responsibility for putting the management's attempts at organisation into practice.
